The HTML <big></big> element enlarges the text within it. It was standardized in 1997, only a month after the first edition of CSS. It was intended as an alternative to larger fonts which could not be used, or which were avoided for visual content out of consideration for speech-based browsers. This element has been deprecated since HTML5 in favor of the CSS font-size property.
